My name is Priya Manohar and I am a housewife. I enjoy cooking and would like to share with you my own ghugni dal recipe which I developed during my stay at Calcutta. Hope you like it.

Ghugni Dal

Ingredients

Dry white Peas - 1cup
Ginger paste - 1 1/2 tbsp
Garlic pods (crushed)- 4
Green Chillies - 4
Cinnamom-1 small stick
Cardamom-2 pods
Bay leaf- 1
Cumin seeds- 1tsp
Onions-2
Tomatoes- 2
Tamarind paste- 1 tsp
Chilli powder-1 tsp
Garam masala powder-2 tsp
Coriander leaves -a few to sprinkle on top
Coconut scrapping -2 tbsp
Oil- 2tbsp
Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Soak dry peas overnight.
  2. In the morning pressure cook it on sim for half an hour.
  3. Take a heavy bottomed vessel, add oil, splutter cumin seeds, then add cinnamom, cardamom, bay leaf fry for a few seconds.
  4. Then add garlic, ginger, greenchillies, fry for a minute and then add onions and fry.
  5. After the onions turn pink add the tomatoes and tamarind paste and saute for a minute.
  6. When the tomatoes turn soft and pulpy add chilli powder and garam masala pwder and salt.
  7. Also add the cooked dry peas and coconut shreds and simmer for five minutes.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  9. Serve hot with rice or chappatis.
