Ridge Gourd Chutney (Hirekai)

Ingredients

Peel of ridge gourd -1 cup
Dry red chillies - 5- 6 in nos.
Sesame seed and dry coconut powder - 2-3 tbsps
Dry roast sesame seeds and dry coconut powder and grind them together Tamarind paste -1 tsp
Jaggery - 1/2 tsp
Salt - as per taste
Water - small amount (if required)
Curry lvs - 5-6 lvs

For seasoning :

Oil - 2 tbsps
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric - a little more than a pinch
Hing - a little more than a pinch

Method :

  1. Wash the ridge gourd thoroughly in hot running water.
  2. Peel it and fry it in two tbsps of oil along with a little salt dry red chillies and curry leaves.
  3. Fry it till the peel gets tender or cooked. Put the cooked peel, the above prepared powder, jaggery, tamarind, salt in mixer and grind to a fine paste. Empty the contents into a container and add the seasoning.

Tastes excellent with rice, chapati dosa, stale jowar roti (bhakri) etc.
