I am Vidya Ramji from Chennai. This is a tasty sambhar without tamarind, can be eaten with Rice/Idli/Dosaas. Hope you enjoy the tongue tingling taste of this south Indian delicacy.

Easy Sambhar Without Tamarind

Ingredients

Onions - 4 nos (cut finely)
Tomatoes - 4 nos (cut into quaters)
Green chillies - 5 nos (slit lengthwise)
Cooked Toor Dhal - 1 teacup
Juice of 2 lemons
Sambhar powder or chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
Besan flour - 1 teaspoon
Bunch Curry Leaves and Coriander for garnishing
Water - 3 teacups
Salt to taste

For Seasoning

Oil - 1 table spoon
Mustard - 1 teaspoon
Fenugreek (Methi seeds) - 1/2 teaspoon
Asafoetida - a pinch
Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon

Method

  1. Pour oil in a kadai. Add seasoning ingredients.
  2. Add onions, green chillies & saute for 5 minutes.
  3. Add cut tomatoes, saute for 3 minutes. Add water & salt & cook till onions are tender.
  4. Add cooked dhal. Boil for 8 min. Add besan with little water and boil for 2 more min.
  5. When thickens, add coriander leaves and curry leaves.
  6. Remove from fire and add the Lime Juice
