Spinach Daal (Paalakura Pappu)

Ingredients

Toor Daal - 1 Cup
1 tbsp Red Chilli Powder or 4 to 5 Green Chillies
Tomatoes - 2 large
Spinach - 1 bunch

For seasoning

1/2 tbsp Chanaa Daal
1/2 tbsp Urad Daal
1/2 tbsp Mustard
1/4 tsp Jeera
A pinch of Asafoetida
A pinch of Turmeric

Method :

  1. Wash daal and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water and turmeric.
  2. In a thick bottomed vessel, put seasoning with 1 tbsp oil, chana daal, urad daal, mustard and jeera.
  3. Once mustard splutters add hing. To this add tomato pieces and after 1 minute add spinach. Cover the lid and let it cook for 10 min.
  4. Mash cooked daal. Once the colour of spinach gets darkened add daal, salt and red chilli powder. simmer and let it cook for 5 more min.
  5. Serve with hot Rice and Ghee.

Methi daal can be made in the same method but substitute spinach with Methi. (if you want daal to be semisolid add some water while adding daal)
