Chemeen/Crab Patichathu

Ingredients

If using crabs instead of prawns do not add chopped coconut.The Crab should be cleaned well and the top shell removed and the body cut into 1/2 through the center. Use 9 medium sized crabs with the legs.

Prawns (small variety) : 2 cups
Coconut (cut into small Square pieces) : 3/4 cups
Onion : 4tbsp
Garlic : 2 tsp
Ginger : 2-1/4 piece
Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp
Chillie powder : 1 tsp (more if you prefer spicy dish)
Pepper powder : 1/4 tsp
Kudam puli(soak in 1/2 cup water for 1/2 hour):3-4 pieces
Curry leaves : A few
Oil (coconut/vegetable) : 3 tbsp
Salt :to taste
Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp

Method

  1. Clean the prawns wel and drain.
  2. Add clean prawns, coconut pieces, 2 tbsp onions,1 tbsp garlic chopped, Ginger choped, turmeric and Chilli powder, kudam puli with water and salt and cook till prawn is 3/4th cooked.
  3. By this time the water should have completely Evaporated and the mixture should be nearly dry. If water remained cook on high flame uncovered stirring continuously without the mixture getting burnt.
  4. In a frying pan heat the oil and add the Mustard and allow to splutter add remaining chopped onions and Garlic and curry leaves stir fry for some time. When it turns Golden add the cooked prawn mixture and fry on low flame till it turns browinish stiring occassionally.
