My name is Manjula and I live in Mumbai. Given below is the recipe for a unique dal preparation, taught to me by my mother. The dish is typical of my home-town Tellicherry, in North Kerala.

Malabar Dal

Ingredients

Tuvar/Arhar Dal - 1 small cup
Coconut - 1/2
Jeera (Cummin seeds) - 1/2 tsp
Onion - 1 small, chopped finely
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Oil
Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Grind together coconut and jeera with a little water, so as to form a smooth paste.
  2. Boil tuvar dal in sufficient water with turmeric and chilli powders.
  3. When the dal gets cooked, add salt and the coconut-jeera mixture. Bring it to a boil.
  4. In a kadhai, fry the chopped onions, till they turn golden brown. Add the onions to the dal. Serve hot with rice.
