Mix Dhal

Ingredients

To pressure cook
Moong dhal - 1 cup
Toor dhal - 1 cup
Turmeric powder - a pinch
Asafetida - a pinch

To grind
Green chillies - a few
Ginger - a small piece
Almonds - 3 nos.
Cashew - 3 nos.
Khus Khus seeds - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves - a small bunch

To season
Tomatoes - 3 (medium)
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Oil - 2 tbsp
Salt - to taste

Method

  1. Wash both dhals, add sufficient water, turmeric, asafetida and pressure cook.
  2. Soak and remove almond skin. To almonds add cashew, khus khus seeds, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves, a little coriander leaves and grind to a smooth paste.
  3. Wash and dice tomatoes.
  4. Heat oil in a pan; add mustard and cumin seeds.
  5. When it splutters, add diced tomatoes and sauti for a few minutes.
  6. Pour in the well-cooked dhal. Add salt and allow to simmer for a few minutes.
  7. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
  8. Serve hot with rice, chapattis, idli or dosai.
