My name is Maya and I live in New Jersey with my husband Hiralal. This is a Kerala style Fish curry -- Varutharacha (Fried masala) Meen (fish) Curry which I make for my family and friends.

Varutharacha Meen Curry

Ingredients

1. 10 pieces of fish
2. 1/2 cup -coconut
3.1 tea spoon -red chili powder
4. 1/3 teaspoon -turmeric powder
5. salt to taste
6. tamarind -1 very small ball (goose berry size)
7. small onion -(cheriyulli) 2-3 if you don't get this then 1/4 cup big onion cut to pieces
8. garlic -2 small ones -cut
9. 2-3 green chilies curry leaves -2 stems
10. 2 tbsp. coconut or other oil
11. coriander powder

Method:

  1. Heat a sauce pan, pour oil and fry onion, garlic till light brown.
  2. Simmer the flame and add the chili, turmeric, coriander powder, salt and sauti for 30 sec..
  3. Then off the gas stove add grated coconut to the sautied mixture, add tamarind and grind it to paste. '
  4. Arrange the fish, green chilies and curry leaves in a sauce pan one next to other and then pour this paste on it.
  5. The fish should immerse in the paste. If not enough water pour till it covers the fish.
  6. When it boils simmer it and cook for 10 min. or till the gravy is thick enough.
  7. Pour oil around the gravy, put some curry leaves and take it off the stove.
  8. Shake it a bit so that the oil spread around the gravy.
