Hi I'm Niranjana and I work in California.  I like cooking less and eating more.  This is a recipe which  is a combination of  my mom and mom-in-law's "pacha kollu rasam" which is soothing for throat pain/ cold. Send you comments to the my email ID.

Pacha Kollu Rasam

Note: All ingredient quantities are ap prox.

Ingredients

Horse gram (kollu) - 5 table spoons
toordhal (thuvaram parupu) - 1 table spoon
cumin-Jeera (seerakam) - 1/2 table spoon
Black pepper (kurumulagu) - 10
curry leaves (karivepillai) - 10 leaves finely chopped
coriander leaves (kothumalli thalai) - as required finely chopped
Mustard seeds (kaduku) - as required
oil/ghee - 1 table spoon
tomato - 1 finely chopped
garlic - 2 finely chopped
small onion - 6 finely chopped

Method

  1. Fry mustard, curry leaves, garlic, onion, add tomato to this mixture and then add water.
  2. Finely grind horse gram, toordhal, jeera, pepper in a blender (mixer) and mix it with the contents in the vessel.
  3. Close the vessel and allow it to boil for 5 mins.
  4. Pour enough water so that the boiling is done for 5mins completely.
  5. Remove it from heat and garnish with coriander leaves.
  6. Stir the rasam once, the watery part on the top can be had as soup, which is very relieving for throat pain and cold.
  7. Eat the rest of the rasam only with rice.
