Meat-Vegetables Casserole

Casserole is a large-size vessel in which food is not only cooked but this casserole pan is directly taken to the table. The dish has taken the name of casserole after the pan. Casserole dishes are very popular in the west because a casserole dish means a whole meal.

Ingredients

1/2 kg mince meat
1 tablespoon baked gram dal
1 inch piece ginger
4 green chillies
3 onions chopped
1 cup shelled green peas
1 cup French beans cut into fine long strips
1 tsp chilly powder
2 cups mashed potatoes
3 medium carrots, scraped and cut into small cubes
1 tablespoon chopped coriander
20 mint leaves chopped finely
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon refined flour
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon garam masala
3 tablespoons tomato ketchup
salt to taste
breadcrumbs as required

Method:

  1. Fry the chopped onions in 1 tablespoon of butter till golden brown in colour keep aside.
  2. Wash the mince meat and grind along with ginger, chillies, gram dal, garam masala and salt to taste. Mix 1 tablespoon butter, chopped coriander and mint in the ground lump and shape into small balls.
  3. Roll these balls in the butter left after frying the onions. Fry them to a light brown colour and keep aside.
  4. Separate the yolks and whites of the eggs. Beat the whites till frothy and keep aside.
  5. Add the yolks, chilly powder, milk, 1 tablespoon butter and salt to taste to the mashed potatoes and mix to form into an even batter.
  6. Saute green peas, French beans and carrots in 1/2 tablespoon butter. Add a little salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
  7. Grease a large Casserole vessel with 1/2 tablespoon melted butter. Sprinkle the refined flour and shake so that it spreads evenly all over the dish.
  8. Spread half of the potato batter in a layer and on it spread the egg whites. On it arrange the ready meat balls. Lastly spread the sauted vegetables in a layer.
  9. Sprinkle fried onions, the tomato ketchup and bread crumbs, lightly fried in just a little butter.
  10. Cover the casserole dish with an aluminium foil. Push it in a pre-heated oven at 3250F. In about an hour it will be ready.
  11. Take out the casserole from the oven, remove the foil.
  12. Take the dish directly to the table and serve sizzling hot scooping out big portions from the casserole on to plates.
