Ingredients

  • 2 quarts - oil for frying
  • 2.25 cups - all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tsp -baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp - baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp - ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp - nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp - ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp - salt
  • 1/2 cup - white sugar
  • 1/4 cup - firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 2 tbsp - vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup - milk
  • 1 cup - unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1/2 tsp - vanilla extract

How to Make Apple Sauce Doughnuts

  • Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt onto piece of waxed paper.
  • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer at medium speed to beat together sugar, brown sugar and eggs until fluffy. Beat in 2 tbsps of oil.
  • Stir flour mixture into egg mixture, alternately with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients, until well blended. Stir in apple sauce and vanilla.
  • Carefully drop batter by level tbsps, 3 or 4 at a time, into hot oil. Do not overcrowd pan or oil may overflow.
  • Fry, turning once with tongs, for 3 minutes or until golden.
  • Transfer with tongs to paper towel to drain. Cool completely.
