Ingredients

  • 3/4 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig - Curry leaves
  • 1.5 tbsp - Ghee
  • 1 medium - tomato, diced
  • 1 - small onion, cut thin and long
  • Turmeric - a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 - small chillies
  • Coriander leaves - a few sprigs
  • 1/2 cup - Toor Dal
  • How to Make Basic Dal Fry:

    1. Pressure cook dal for 12-15 mins and keep aside
    2. On a pan, heat ghee and splutter mustard seeds
    3. Add the cumin and curry leaves and leave for a few seconds
    4. Add the onion and chillies and fry till the onion turns brown and then add the tomato pieces and fry till tender. Add turmeric powder and fry for a few more seconds
    5. When done, add the dal (mash it a bit), salt and water as necessary and leave it for some time to simmer.
    6. Garnish with coriander leaves
