Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup - Toor Dal
  • 1 - Onion
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric
  • 3-4 tsp - Tamarind juice
  • Curry leaves (optional)
  • Vaghar (tempering):
  • 1 tsp - mixed mustard, cumin and Urad Dal
  • To grind:
  • 1 small cup - grated Coconut
  • 3-4 - Green chillies
  • 1/2 cup - Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 bunch - Cilantro
  • 3-4 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • A pinch - Asafoetida
  • 1.5 cup - water
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Bellary Saaru:

    1. Add water and grind all the ingredients for grinding to a paste.
    2. Pressure cook toor dal and keep aside .
    3. Heat oil, add the vaghar ingredients. Once they splutter, add curry leaves, turmeric, and onion and fry till golden brown.
    4. Add toor dal, boil for five minutes and add tamarind juice.
    5. Then add the ground paste, boil well for ten minutes.
    6. Serve hot with rice or chapatti.
