Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup - toor dal
  • 1 - onion
  • 1/2 tsp - turmeric
  • 3-4 tsp - tamarind juice
  • Curry leaves (optional)
  • Vaghar (tempering):
  • 1 tsp - mixed mustard, cumin and urad dal
  • To grind:
  • 1 small cup - grated coconut
  • 3-4 - green chillies
  • 1/2 cup - coriander seeds
  • 1/2 bunch - cilantro
  • 3-4 tsp - cumin seeds
  • A pinch - asafoetida
  • 1.5 cup - water
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Bellary Saaru

  • Add water and grind all the ingredients for grinding to a paste.
  • Pressure cook toor dal and keep aside .
  • Heat oil, add the vaghar ingredients. Once they splutter, add curry leaves, turmeric, and onion and fry till golden brown.
  • Add toor dal, boil for five minutes and add tamarind juice.
  • Then add the ground paste, boil well for ten minutes.
  • Serve hot with rice or chapatti.
