Ingredients

  • 1 bunch - spinach, chopped coarsely
  • 1/2 cup - Channa dal
  • 1 - onion, sliced
  • 2 - Green chillies chopped
  • 1 - Garlic flake grated
  • 1 inch piece - ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tsp - Wheat flour
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric
  • 2 to 3 pinches - Asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp - Ghee or oil
  • How to Make Channa Dal with Spinach:

    1. Wash and soak channa dal in water.
    2. Pressure cook channa dal in 1 cup water, for 2 whistles in a pressure cooker.
    3. The dal should be soft, but intact.
    4. Heat some water, immerse spinach and boil it.
    5. Blanche spinach for a minute, take off from the fire and drain.
    6. Run tap water over the spinach and let it drain.
    7. Heat oil in a pan, add seeds, asafoetida, allow to splutter.
    8. Add ginger, chillies, garlic stir, add onion, stir fry for 2 mins
    9. Add channa dal along with its water, blanched spinach, salt.
    10. Add turmeric, sprinkle wheat flour, stir and boil.
    11. Simmer till the liquid gets slightly thickened.
    12. Serve hot with fresh phulkas or steamed rice.
