Coconut Sambol is a part of Sri Lankan cuisine. Made with all dry ingredients other than onion. This sambol is made by just pounding all the ingredients together. A super quick and easy recipe that can be made in minutes. It can be used as an accompaniment with rice or dosas.


  • 1 - Fresh coconut, scraped
  • 1 tsp - Dry red chillies, coarsely ground
  • 1.5 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 10 - Madras onions, medium sized, peeled and chopped
  • 1 - Green chilli, chopped
  • Juice of 1 Lemon
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Coconut Sambol:

    1. Pound the onion and green chilli till they are mashed. Do not make into a paste.
    2. Add the coarsely ground chillies and pound for about 30 seconds.
    3. Add chilli powder to the coconut and mix well.
    4. Add lime juice and salt.
    5. Mix well until the entire coconut gets thoroughly mixed with the other ingredients.
