Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup - toor dal
  • 1 tsp - ghee
  • 1 - potato
  • 150 g - yellow pumpkin
  • 1 - brinjal
  • 1 - raw banana
  • 1 - papaya
  • 2 tsp - grated coconut
  • 4 - dried red chillies
  • 1 tbsp - ginger
  • 1 tbsp - turmeric
  • 1 tsp - panch - phutana (cumin, mustard, fennel, fenugreek, kala jeera) seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - sugar
  • 2 tsp - fried cumin and red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Dalma (Oriya)

  • Dry roast cumin and red chillies in a pan, grind it and keep aside.
  • Boil 4 cups of water and add both dals (toor and channa), coconut, salt, minced ginger, turmeric and sugar.
  • When the dals are half cooked, add all the vegetables and cook till soft and tender.
  • Fry the panch-phutana until it crackles and add it to the cooked dal.
  • Sprinkle roasted cumin and chilli powder.
  • Decorate with grated coriander leaves.
  • Serve.
