  • 1 cup tur dal
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp pepper powder
  • 1 tbsp Garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 cup Tamarind juice extracted from a small ball of Tamarind or 2 tsp Tamarind paste
  • salt to taste
  • How to Make Dhal Mulligatawny (Dhal Rasam):

    1. Cook tur dal with 2 cups of water.
    2. Add chilli powder, tomato, cumin powder, pepper powder, garlic paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder, tamarind juice, salt and some more water to the cooked dal and boil.
    3. Cook on low heat for few minutes.
    4. Heat 2 tsp oil in another vessel, add the mustard seeds.
    5. When they begin to splutter add the sliced onion, curry leaves, broken red chillies and saute for a few minutes.
    6. Pour the mulligatawny or dal pepper water into the seasoning and mix well.
    7. Serve with rice.
