Ingredients

  • 1 cup tur dal
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp pepper powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 cup tamarind juice extracted from a small ball of tamarind or 2 tsp tamarind paste
  • salt to taste

How to Make Dhal Mulligatawny (Dhal Rasam)

  • Cook tur dal with 2 cups of water.
  • Add chilli powder, tomato, cumin powder, pepper powder, garlic paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder, tamarind juice, salt and some more water to the cooked dal and boil.
  • Cook on low heat for few minutes.
  • Heat 2 tsp oil in another vessel, add the mustard seeds.
  • When they begin to splutter add the sliced onion, curry leaves, broken red chillies and saute for a few minutes.
  • Pour the mulligatawny or dal pepper water into the seasoning and mix well.
  • Serve with rice.
