Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg - king fish (made into 1/4 inch thick slices)
  • 1/2 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp - lemon juice
  • 1 tsp - salt
  • 3 medium onions, chopped
  • 1 tbsp - ginger, chopped
  • 1 tbsp - garlic, chopped
  • 1 tsp - cumin powder
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp - red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp - fenugreek seeds
  • 2 cups - yogurt, whisked
  • 1 tsp - garam masala powder
  • 4 tbsp - oil

How to Make Dum Machhi

  • Smear the fish with salt, turmeric powder and lemon juice on both sides.
  • Keep aside for 30 mins. Wash and pat dry.
  • Heat oil in a griddle and shallow fry on both sides till it is pink. Keep warm.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds.
  • When they start spluttering add the onions and fry till pink.
  • Add the garlic and saute for a minute.
  • Now stir in the red chilli paste, cumin powder, ginger and salt.
  • Saute for a few seconds and mix in the yogurt. Saute for 3 mins.
  • Add the fish pieces and garam masala, mix and fix a tight lid on the pan.
  • Continue cooking on very low heat for about 6 to 8 mins.
