Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Whole green gram dal
  • 1 - big Onion
  • 1 - medium Tomato
  • A generous pinch - Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp - Red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp - Garam masala powder
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 tsp - Oil
  • 1 tsp - Jeera seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard seeds
  • 2 to 3 pods - Garlic
  • A few - Curry leaves

How to Make Green Gram Dhal

  • Soak green gram for at least 6-7 hours.
  • Pressure cook dal with enough water for 3 to 4 whistles until soft and mushy.
  • Give a quick stir with a ladle to mush it up.
  • Heat oil, add mustard seeds, jeera and curry leaves and allow it to splutter.
  • Then add garlic and saute for a second.
  • Add chopped onions and saute until slightly browned.
  • Then add tomatoes and saute until raw smell leaves and it shrinks.
  • Then add turmeric, garam masala, red chilli powder and required salt and mix well.
  • Add cooked green gram and add 1/4th cup of water and let it boil for 5-7 minutes until the curry is well blended with the masalas.
  • Serve hot with ghee and rice.
