Ingredients

  • Baked beans - 1 can
  • Tomato paste - 7 to 8 tbsp
  • Onion - 1 chopped fine
  • Green chilli - 1 chopped fine
  • Garlic - 5 to 6 pods chopped fine
  • Ginger - 1/2 inch piece (optional)
  • Cinnamon - 1/2 inch stick or 1/2 tsp powder
  • Bay Leaf - 1
  • Clove - 2 to 3
  • Elaichi seeds only - few (optional)
  • Saunf powder - 1.5 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Jeera - 1 or 2 tsp
  • Jeera powder - 1 tsp
  • Olive oil or Canola Oil - 3 to 4 tbsp
  • Cilantro - a bunch, chopped fine
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Indian Style Baked Beans:

    1. In a pan, add oil, jeera, bay leaf, cinnamon.
    2. Once the jeera is brown, add finely chopped onion, garlic, ginger and green chilli.
    3. Meanwhile, dry grind cinnamon, saunf, cloves and elaichi.
    4. After about 10 mins on medium heat, the onions should be golden brown.
    5. Now add the dry ground powder and fry it for 7-8 mins.
    6. Then add the tomato paste and a bit of chopped cilantro.
    7. Also add the red chilli powder and turmeric powder
    8. Now fry this till the tomato paste changes colour and the raw smell of the tomato paste disappears.
    9. Now add the baked beans with its liquid.
    10. Cover and let it cook on low heat for about 10 mins.
    11. Now add jeera powder and saunf.
    12. Continue to cook covered on low flame.
    13. Add water if it gets too thick. But make sure you let the beans cook on low heat, covered, for 15-20 mins at least.
    14. In the last 5 mins, add cilantro and salt.
    15. Serve with rotis.
