Ingredients

  • 1/2 - Onions
  • 1/2 - Tomatoes
  • Tamarind, the size of a small ball
  • 4 to 5 pods - Garlic
  • Brinjal or ladyfinger as per own choice
  • 1 tsp - sambar powder
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp - Turmeric
  • Coconut (optional)
  • 4 or 5 - Red Chillies
  • 1 tsp - mustard
  • 1 tsp - Channa dal
  • How to Make Karakuzhambu:

    1. First in a kadai heat oil, add mustard seeds. Once it crackles, add 1 tsp of channa dal and red chillies. Add onions, when it becomes soft, add tomatoes and tamarind pulp
    2. Add sambar powder and turmeric powder.
    3. Saute for 5 mins.
    4. If required, add some grated coconut.
    5. Allow it to cool for 10 mins then grind the above into a paste.
    6. Heat oil in another kadai, add brinjal (slit into 4) and fry very well.
    7. Now add the ground paste with some water and salt.
    8. Boil for 5 mins and serve with rice.
