Kathal Ki Sabji is a spicy and delicious jackfruit curry served as a side dish with rotis or chapatis.

Kathal ki sabzi, as the name says, is a spicy vegetarian delight made with jackfruit. This vegetarian recipe is mostly popular in Northern regions of India and relished as a curry.

The unripe jackfruit is used to make this delicious side dish. If you want to know how to make it at home, simply follow the easy recipe technique with detailed steps.

The jackfruit is a rich source of many minerals and has a high nutritious value. It can be made into curry by sautéing it with some spices such as turmeric, chilli, powder coriander powder and garam masala. The gravy is made and fried kathal along with its seeds are cooked. The dish tastes best with rotis.


  • 2 lbs - kathal (jackfruit, unripe)
  • 2 - onions, medium
  • 2 - tomatoes, medium
  • oil for deep frying, mustard or any
  • 1.5 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp -Garam Masala 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Kathal Ki Sabjii:

    1. Before proceeding, spread a little oil on your palms to avoid the jackfruit from sticking to your hands.
    2. Peel the kathal and chop into 1 - 1.5 inch pieces.
    3. The almond-shaped seeds can be peeled and kept aside with kathal.
    4. Heat oil in kadai and deep fry the kathal and seeds.
    5. Drain the excess oil.
    6. Take about 2-3 tbsps of oil, add sliced onions and fry till it turns golden brown.
    7. To this add chopped tomatoes and fry for another 5-7 minutes.
    8. Add coriander powder, chilli powder, haldi powder and fry for about a minute.
    9. To this, add the fried kathal and mix well and cook covered for 15-20 minutes turning in between.
    10. Finally, add garam masala and serve hot with chapatti.
