Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup - Cooked toor dal
  • 1 - Onion (chopped)
  • 1 - Tomato (chopped)
  • 1 cup - Lotus root (chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 - Green chilli
  • 1 tsp - Mustard seeds + urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1 - Dry red chilli
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp - Lemon juice
  • Oil
  • Roast and Grind:
  • 2 tbsp - Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Fenugreek seeds
  • 3 - Dry red chillies
  • 1/4 tsp - Asafetida powder
  • 2 tbsp - Channa dal

How to Make Lotus Root Sambar

  • Dry roast the ingredients given in the Roast and Grind section. Then grind into a fine powder, keep aside.
  • Heat enough oil in a vessel; splutter the mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds, and dry red chilli.
  • Now add the onions, tomato, and curry leaves, and saute for a few minutes.
  • Add the lotus roots, stir for a few minutes.
  • Add the spice powder, turmeric powder, green chilli, and salt, cook on simmer for a few minutes.
  • Finally add the dal and some more water, cook everything on medium flame until the gravy thickens.
  • Add the lemon juice and remove from flame.
  • Serve hot with rice.
