Ingredients

  • Rohu or Hilsa fish - 500 g
  • Onion - 1 cup, chopped
  • Ginger - 3 cm
  • Garlic - 4 flakes
  • Dry red chilli - 3
  • Green chillies - 3
  • Poppy seeds - 2 tsp
  • Mustard oil - 4 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar or Jaggery powder - 1 tsp
  • Garam masala - 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

How to Make Mach Masaledar (Masala Fish Curry)

  • Cut fish into slices.
  • Wash well.
  • Apply some turmeric powder and salt to fish and wash again. (This will remove the fishy smell).
  • Grind onion with ginger, garlic, 3 red chillies, green chillies and poppy seeds to a paste.
  • Heat oil in a kadai.
  • Add one dry chilli, mustard, fenugreek and cumin seeds.
  • When they are fragrant, add the ground paste and fry well.
  • Add the fish slices and fry lightly.
  • Add turmeric, salt, sugar or jaggery and lime juice.
  • Add about 1 cup of water and simmer till the fish is cooked and the gravy is thick.
  • Serve garnished with coriander leaves.
