Ingredients

  • 200 gm - moth dal
  • 2 tsp - garlic, chopped
  • 2 tsp - ginger, grated
  • 1 cup - onion, finely chopped
  • 3 - tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tsp - green chilly, chopped
  • 3 tbsp - clarified butter
  • 1 tsp - cumin seeds
  • spices: 1 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp - red chili powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp - garam masala
  • 1/4 cup - coriander leaves, chopped

How to Make Moth Di Dal

  • Wash and cook moth in 3 glasses of water with 1/2 tsp of salt for 4 whistles in a pressure cooker.
  • Take 1/2 bowl of boiled dal, smash it and keep it aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds and with the sound of crackling add grated ginger and garlic.
  • Saute and wait till it becomes golden.
  • Add chopped onions.
  • Saute for 5 minutes till they are light golden and add all spices and salt, stir it.
  • Now add chopped chillies and tomatoes.
  • Stir and cook till oil comes out.
  • Now add the dal kept aside.
  • Stir continuously till ghee comes out from edges.
  • Add this masala to boiled dal.
  • Allow the dal to cook for 10 minutes so that the masala mixes properly and a flavour arises.
  • Remove it from heat, add garam masala and chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice and chapatti.
