Ingredients

  • 6 - Amla - nellikka - gooseberry
  • 1 cup ( 100 ml ) - water
  • 1 - Green chilli ( small ), slit lengthwise
  • 1/2 tsp - salt
  • For Coconut paste:
  • 1/2 cup ( 50 gms ) - coconut, grated
  • 1/2 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp - water
  • Grind a smooth paste of above ingredients with water.
  • For seasoning:
  • 2 tsp - oil
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - Jeera ( Cumin seeds )
  • 1/4 tsp - Methi seeds ( Fenugreek seeds )
  • 1 sprig - Curry leaves
  • How to Make Nellikka ( Amla - Avalo - Gooseberry ) Pulisseri:

    1. Wash and clean amla - gooseberry.
    2. Remove seed and cut into cubes.
    3. In a bowl, mix with 1 cup ( 100 ml ) water, salt and slit green chilli.
    4. Cover with a lid and cook on a medium heat for 15 minutes or until done.
    5. Add coconut paste, mix well and cook on a low heat for 8 - 10 minutes ( Do not add extra water ). Switch off the heat.
    6. For seasoning:
    7. Heat oil in a frying pan. Add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add jeera and methi and fry for 1 - 2 minute until brown.
    8. Add curry leaves and saute for 2 - 3 minutes until fragrant.
    9. Pour the seasoning over nellikka pulisseri and mix well.
    10. Serve with rice.
