Ingredients

  • 2 cups - Small Onions (Sambar Onions)
  • 1 - Coconut grated
  • 3.5 tbsp - coriander Powder
  • 2 tbsp - Chilli Powder
  • 2 tbsp - Oil
  • 1 tsp - Turmeric Powder
  • 1 - Tamarind, small ball soaked in water.
  • Salt to taste
  • For seasoning
  • Mustard
  • few - Curry leaves

How to Make Onion Theeyal

  • Saute the onions in a little oil for 3 mins.
  • Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and fry the coconut (till light brown) in it with coriander, turmeric and chilli powder for 2 minutes on low flame. Grind this into a fine paste.
  • Make a fine pulp from the tamarind and add it to the ground masala.
  • Place the masala on fire, add salt, the onions and cook till onions are done.
  • Finally season it with mustard and curry leaves.
  • Serve with rice or dosas.
