How to Make Parrupu Usli

  • Chop the French beans finely and boil it with a little salt and keep it aside. Soak tuvar dal with the red chillies for about 2 hours. Then grind to a coarse paste with a minimum amount of water. Add hing and a little salt.
  • Pressure cook the dal mixture till you hear 5 whistles.
  • Allow the mixture to cool and break the lumps and make it into a coarse powder (you can use the chopper attachment in the food processor for this).
  • Take oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter.
  • Add the dal mix and beans to it and fry well.
  • Add salt if required. This goes well with kadhi, jeera rasam and rice.
  • Similar preparation can be made with banana flowers in which case the florets have to be separated and the black stamen has to be removed.
  • The flowers can be cooked in the pressure cooker along with the dal mix.
