  • 1 - pavakkai (bitter gourd), cut into round slices.
  • 1 cup - tur dal, pre cooked.
  • Tamarind - Lemon sized.
  • Asafoetida - a pinch.
  • 1.5 tbsp - sambar powder.
  • 2 or 3 - green chillies.
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder.
  • salt to taste.
  • To garnish: Coconut gratings.
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard.
  • 1 tsp - urad dal.
  • 1/4 tsp - cumin.
  • curry leaves.
  • oil to fry.
  • How to Make Pavakkai Pittlai:

    1. In a kadai, heat a little oil and fry pavakkai well and keep them aside.
    2. In a wide vessel, add tamarind to water with salt and turmeric powder and allow to boil. When boiled, add asafoetida and sambar powder and give another boil.
    3. Then add the pre cooked tuvar dal and boil. Now sambar is ready.
    4. Then in a little oil, fry mustard, coconut, urad dal, curry leaves, jeera till coconut becomes red. Add this to the sambar. Also add the pre-fried pavakkai.
    5. The hot pittlai is ready.
