Ingredients

  • Cowpea (long/snake beans) - 1/2 kg, chopped.
  • Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup.
  • oil - 1 tbsp.
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp.
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.
  • Dry Red Chillies - 4, broken into pieces.
  • Onion - 1/2 cup, chopped.
  • Curry leaves.
  • Salt to taste.
  • How to Make Payer Upperi (Long Beans, Kerala Style):

    1. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
    2. When they splutter, add chillies.
    3. Add curry leaves and onion.
    4. Fry onion till brown.
    5. Add cowpeas and salt.
    6. Add 1/2 cup of water and cook covered on a low flame till the beans are cooked and the water evaporates.
    7. Add coconut and saute.
    8. Serve with rice.
