Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Channa dal (Black gram dal)
  • 5 cup - water
  • 1 - small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 - medium tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp - each Ginger and garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 - green chillies, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp - cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp - Garam Masala powder
  • 1 tsp - Jeera
  • 1 pinch - Hing
  • salt - to taste
  • 2 tbsp - Butter
  • 2 tbsp - pure Ghee

How to Make Spicy Channa Dal

  • Wash the dal, cook in a pressure cooker with water, turmeric, salt and butter.
  • After one whistle, let it cook on a slow heat for another five mins.
  • In the meantime, take ghee in a pan, heat it and put jeera.
  • When jeera starts to splutter, put garlic and onion.
  • Saute it till onions are a little golden brown.
  • Now mix tomatoes, ginger and let them cook for 1-2 mins.
  • Then add hing, chopped chilli and chopped cilantro.
  • Let it cook again for another minute, add red chilli and garam masala powders.
  • Once the dal is done mix the masala thoroughly.
  • Let the dal boil once with the masala.
  • Serve hot with chapatti or rice.
