Ingredients

  • 2 - small onions, thinly sliced lengthwise
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 2 tbsp - oil
  • 2 pods - chopped garlic
  • 1/2 tsp - chopped ginger
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp - red chilli powder
  • 1 - tamarind, small lime-sized
  • 1-2 tsp - jaggery

How to Make Sweet Sour Onion Curry

  • Soak the tamarind in 1/2 cup of warm water and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, temper with mustard seeds.
  • Add the sliced onions, ginger and garlic.
  • Sprinkle some salt.
  • Fry until the onion turns golden brown.
  • Extract water from the tamarind (it should be thick) and add to the onions.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, more salt and allow the mixture to cook for about 10-15 minutes or until the raw smell of tamarind goes away and the oil starts to float on top.
  • Add jaggery powder and mix well.
  • Serve hot with chapatti or poori.
