Avial is a delicious side dish, famous in South India especially relished as a traditional dish during the Onam festival in Kerala. It is basically a mix of varied vegetables cooked along with tasty ingredients. 

You can pick vegetables that you prefer for this dish. Brinjals, potatoes, pumpkin, carrots are slow-cooked along with coconut paste and sour curds for this avial recipe. This delicious curry is relished with steamed rice.


  • 50 gms. each of brinjals, potatoes, Pumpkin and Carrots
  • 1 Raw banana
  • 2 Drumsticks
  • 50 gms. each of French beans and Cabbage
  • ½ grated Coconut
  • 5 green chillies, minced
  • ½ cup sour curds
  • 1 tbsp. roasted Cumin seeds
  • A few Curry leaves
  • ½ tsp. Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Tasty Avial:

    1. Peel and cut all the vegetables into 1 inch pieces.
    2. Grind cumin seeds and coconut to a paste and mix into the curds.
    3. Add salt, chillies and turmeric powder to the vegetables with very little water.
    4. Cover tightly and cook till the vegetables are done, mix in the coconut paste and curry leaves and bring slowly to a boil. Serve hot.
