Ingredients

  • 1 - big Onion
  • 3 - big Tomatoes
  • 1 - small ball of Tamarind
  • Pinch of Turmeric
  • 2 tsp - sambhar powder
  • 2 tsp - grated Coconut
  • 2 - Green chillies
  • 2 tsp - Pandharpur dal
  • 1 tsp - khuskhus (white poppy seeds)
  • 2-3 - Garlic pieces
  • 1 small cup - Coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • For tadka:
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Jeera
  • 1/2 tsp - Urad Dal
  • 1/2 tsp - Chana dal
  • 2 - Red Chillies
  • How to Make Tomato Gozhu:

    1. Soak the tamarind for around 10 mins in water and keep it aside.
    2. Take a little oil for tadka in a frying pan and pour all the tadka ingredients into it. Let it fry for a minute until the dal becomes red in colour.
    3. Cut the onion into small pieces and fry it once the tadka is done, until it turns light brown in colour.
    4. Cut the tomatoes into small pieces and add with the onions.
    5. Now add sambhar powder, turmeric, salt and fry it for a minute or so.
    6. Then add the tamarind water and let it boil for 5-10 mins.
    7. In the meantime, grind the coconut, green chillies, khuskhus, coriander leaves, garlic and pandharpur dal into fine paste.
    8. Now pour the paste into the frying pan and mix for a minute or so. Serve hot with rice, dosas, idlis and even rotis.
