Ingredients

  • Idli Rawa - 1/2 cup
  • Mustard - 1 tsp
  • Half-broken Channa dal - 1 tbsp
  • Half-broken Urad Dal - 1 tbsp
  • A pinch of Hing
  • Carrot (skin peeled) - 1
  • Peas - few pieces
  • Beans - 4
  • Tomato - 1
  • Capsicum - 1
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Curd - 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Traditional Upma:

    1. Wash and chop the vegetables and ginger.
    2. In a heavy-bottom vessel, add idli rawa, 1.5 glasses of water and half the curd.
    3. Mix well and allow it to boil on low flame for 10 mins.
    4. Add extra water if needed and stir continuously.
    5. Simultaneously, pour oil in a pan, add mustard, chana dal, urad dal and fry till dal turns golden brown.
    6. Add the vegetables, hing and curry leaves and fry well.
    7. Sprinkle some water, close the lid and cook on low flame.
    8. Stir occasionally.
    9. Once the vegetables are cooked, add the cooked idli rawa, salt to taste and the remaining curd.
    10. Stir well and cook for 10 mins. Add water if too dry.
