Ingredients

  • 500 gms. shinghara / rohu fish, cut into 2” cubes
  • 4 tbsp. oil
  • ½ cup Tamarind extract
  • 1 tsp. Mustard Seeds
  • ½ tsp. Fenugreek (methi) seeds
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp. ginger, finely chopped
  • 4 green chillies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tbsp. garlic, chopped
  • 1 ½ tsp. chilli powder
  • 8-10 Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tsp. Turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp. coriander powder
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped

How to Make Travancore Fish Curry

  • Wash fish pieces and pat dry.
  • Marinate in half of the tamarind extract for 30 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds and fry until they crackle.
  • Add onion and fry until pale brown in colour.
  • Add ginger, green chillies, garlic, chili powder, turmeric and coriander powder and salt.
  • Fry for a minute.
  • Mix in tomatoes, salt and remaining tamarind extract.
  • Bring to a boil and add fish, followed by curry leaves.
  • Cover the pan and leave to simmer until fish becomes tender.
  • Serve with: Boiled rice or Appams or Dosas.
