Tur daal rice is a lentil recipe which is popular in various parts of India. The recipe is a comfort food native to Gujarat.

The lentil recipe is simple yet delicious and is very easy to make. You can also learn how to make this recipe at home with our quick recipe guide elaborated with pictures. Tur dal is also known as arhar dal.

The recipe involves cooking of dal in a pressure cooker along with some spices and condiments. The recipe is cooked in Indian style and is tempered with spices like hing, tamarind, grated coconut and cumin seeds with ghee. This dal has an amazing aroma and flavor. It is best enjoyed with rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups - Rice
  • 1 cup - tur dal
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - mustard
  • 1 tsp - Urad Dal
  • 1 tsp - Fenugreek
  • 10 - small Onions
  • 2 - Tomatoes
  • 2 tsp - ginger-garlic paste
  • A bunch of Curry leaves
  • Coriander for garnishing
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • Lemon size Tamarind
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tsp - oil
  • 1 tsp - Ghee
  • To grind:
  • 10 - Red Chillies
  • 1/2 cup - grated Coconut
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 5 - small Onions
  • 1/2 tsp - aniseeds
  • How to Make Tur dal rice:

    1. Grind all the ingredients listed under 'To grind' with a little water to make a smooth paste and keep aside.
    2. Soak rice and tur dal (add fenugreek seeds to it) separately with enough water for an hour.
    3. Add 2 cups water in a pressure cooker, add tur dal and turmeric powder and cook up to 1 whistle.
    4. Add rice with 3 cups of water and cook up to 2 whistles.
    5. Later, add the tamarind extract, salt, the ground paste and cook up to 4 whistles.
    6. Heat ghee in a pan. Add chopped onions, tomatoes and ginger garlic paste. Saute them well.
    7. Now heat oil in a pan. Add mustard, urad dal and curry leaves and let them splutter.
    8. Add all these to the rice.
    9. Finally garnish with coriander and serve hot.
    10. Serve this rice with avial and enjoy.
