Ingredients

  • 2 cups - rice
  • 1 cup - tur dal
  • 1/2 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - mustard
  • 1 tsp - urad dal
  • 1 tsp - fenugreek
  • 10 - small onions
  • 2 - tomatoes
  • 2 tsp - ginger-garlic paste
  • A bunch of curry leaves
  • Coriander for garnishing
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • Lemon size tamarind
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tsp - oil
  • 1 tsp - ghee
  • To grind:
  • 10 - red chillies
  • 1/2 cup - grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp - cumin seeds
  • 5 - small onions
  • 1/2 tsp - aniseeds

How to Make Tur dal rice

  • Grind all the ingredients listed under 'To grind' with a little water to make a smooth paste and keep aside.
  • Soak rice and tur dal (add fenugreek seeds to it) separately with enough water for an hour.
  • Add 2 cups water in a pressure cooker, add tur dal and turmeric powder and cook up to 1 whistle.
  • Add rice with 3 cups of water and cook up to 2 whistles.
  • Later, add the tamarind extract, salt, the ground paste and cook up to 4 whistles.
  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add chopped onions, tomatoes and ginger garlic paste. Saute them well.
  • Now heat oil in a pan. Add mustard, urad dal and curry leaves and let them splutter.
  • Add all these to the rice.
  • Finally garnish with coriander and serve hot.
  • Serve this rice with avial and enjoy.
