Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup - Split white Urad Dal
  • 1/4 cup - Masoor dal
  • 1 - Ridge gourd (medium size and chopped)
  • 1 - Onion (chopped)
  • 1 - Tomato (chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp - Lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Urad Dal
  • 2 - Dry Red Chillies
  • A Few Curry leaves
  • Oil
  • Salt
  • To roast and grind:
  • 2 tbsp - Coriander seeds
  • 2 - Dry Red Chillies
  • 1/2 tsp - Asafoetida powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Fenugreek seeds
  • 3 tbsp - Coconut (grated)
  • How to Make Turai Urad Dal:

    1. Take the washed urad dal, masoor dal, chopped ridge gourd, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes with turmeric powder, salt and enough water in pressure cooker.
    2. Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
    3. Meanwhile dry roast the ingredients under the list 'to roast and grind' and grind to a fine powder.
    4. Once the pressure cooker cools, smash the cooked vegetables and dal with a spatula.
    5. Now add the grounded roasted spice powder to the dal and cook everything on simmer.
    6. Adjust the thickness of the dal with water.
    7. Heat the oil in a pan. Splutter the mustard seeds and urad dal. Add dry red chillies and curry leaves and fry them.
    8. Add the tempered spices and lemon juice to the dal and give a stir.
    9. Serve hot with rice.
