  • 1/2 cup - sooji rava
  • 1 - onion
  • 1 cup - avarekai
  • 1/2 tsp - black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp - jeera
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 2 tbsp - grated coconut
  • 1 - green chilli
  • 2 tsp - oil
  • 1 tsp - sugar
  • 3 - curry leaves
  • a pinch - asafoetida
  • Salt as per taste

How to Make Avarekkai Upma

  • Dry roast rava in a kadai until it turns golden brown and keep aside.
  • Cook avarekai till it turns soft and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in kadai and splutter mustard and cumin seeds and add to it, turmeric, curry leaves, green chilli and pepper powder.
  • Saute the chopped onions till it turns transparent.
  • Now add 1.5 cups of water to the onions and add avarekai, salt and sugar and mix well.
  • When the water boils add rava little by little.
  • Stir continuously so that lumps are not formed.
  • Cook covered for about 2 mins. Add grated coconut and mix well.
  • Remove from flame and add lemon juice and serve.
