  • 1 lb - bata fish (or any white-fleshed fish)
  • 4 - medium brinjals (cut into halves)
  • 9-10 - spicy urad dal bori/vadi
  • 1 - medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 - large tomato (finely chopped)
  • 3 tbsp - mustard seeds powder
  • 1 tsp - panch-phoron
  • 2 - green chillies (slit lengthwise)
  • 1 bunch - coriander leaves (optional)
  • 1 tsp - turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil - as required

How to Make Bata fish curry with spicy urad dal bori

  • Cut and wash the fish pieces thoroughly.
  • Marinate with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Pan fry the fish pieces to a light golden brown colour on both sides. Keep aside.
  • Pan fry urad dal bori, keep aside.
  • In a flat-bottomed skillet, add panch foron. Once it starts to splutter, add green chillies and onion, fry till the onion turns translucent.
  • Add brinjal and turmeric powder. Cover the lid and cook for 1-2 mins until the raw smell of the turmeric is gone.
  • Add the chopped tomato and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Add 2 cups of water and salt, cover the lid and cook until it starts to boil. Add the fish pieces and cook for another 4-5 minutes.
  • Add mustard paste (mix mustard powder with 2-3 tbsp of water and keep aside for a minimum of 10 minutes to make a paste) and urad dal bori and cook for not more than 2 minutes.
  • Add the chopped coriander leaves (optional).
