Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup - black gram, skinned and split
  • 1/4 cup - yellow mung beans
  • 2 cups - raw papaya, chopped
  • 1 -onion, chopped
  • 1 - tomato, chopped
  • 2 - green chillies, slit opened
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds + black gram
  • 2 - dry red chillies
  • 1/4 tsp - asafoetida powder
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • Few curry leaves
  • Salt
  • Oil
  • To roast and grind:
  • 1 tbsp - coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp - cumin seeds
  • 3 - dry red chillies
  • 3 tbsp - desiccated coconut

How to Make Raw Papaya and Urad Dal Kootu

  • Roast and grind all the ingredients given under the list 'to roast and grind' to a fine powder.
  • Pressure cook black gram, mung beans, raw papaya with turmeric powder, salt and water to 3 whistles.
  • Keep aside until the steam get released.
  • Heat enough oil and splutter mustard seeds, black gram, asafoetida powder, and fry the red chillies until brown and saute onions, tomatoes, green chillies, curry leaves till the vegetables are done.
  • To this add the cooked papaya mixture, prepared spice powder and cook all for few minutes.
  • Serve hot.
