  • 1 cup - black whole urad dal
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp - urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp - hing powder
  • 1 tsp - ginger (chopped)
  • 2 - green chillies (chopped)
  • 2 - dry red chillies
  • 1/4 cup - grated coconut
  • oil as required
  • a few curry leaves

How to Make Whole Urad Dal Sundal

  • Soak the black whole urad dal overnight and cook in a pressure cooker with salt and enough water (up to 3 whistles).
  • Strain the water and keep the dal aside.
  • Heat enough oil and fry the mustard seeds, urad dal, dry red chillies and curry leaves with hing.
  • Add the chopped ginger pieces, green chillies and cook for a few seconds.
  • Add the cooked whole urad dal, salt and grated coconut.
  • Toss the ingredients gently for a few minutes and put off the flame.
  • Serve warm.
