I am Chithra from Malaysia - here is an easy rasam which can be served as either soup or with rice.

Milagu-paruppu Rasam

Ingredients

Tuvar dhal - 1/4 cup
Tamarind - small ball
Sambar powder - 1 tsp or Rasam powder 1 and half tsp
Black Pepper seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Tomato - 2 small
Salt to taste
Ghee - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Coriander leaves - to garnish

Method:

  1. Pressure cook the tuvar dhal nicely, mash and keep aside.
  2. Soak the tamarind in warm water and extract the juice.
  3. Add the sambar powder (rasam powder) salt.
  4. Cut tomatoes and boil till the pungent smell of the sambar powder wanes off.
  5. Grind the pepper and cumin seeds coarsely and add to this boiled mixture and boil for a minute. Remove from fire.
  6. Add some water to the mashed dhal and bring to boil in a separate vessel. When it boils add the rasam to the dhal and boil for a minute.
  7. Heat ghee and add the mustard seeds, allow to splutter and pour to the rasam.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
