Hi!
I am Subbalakshmi, living in Newjersey. I find plantains in all the vegetable stores in US. But they are not as tastier as the ones from India. However I found a recipe with this.. Arati Kaaya (that is we call a raw plantain in Andhra) which is liked by my husband a lot. Try this out and let me know your suggestions at marellapudi@hotmail.com. This is a quick recipe especially helpful for working women.

Raw Plantain (Aratikaaya) Curry

Ingredients

2 Raw Plantains.

For Masala:

1 spoon of Channa Daal
1/2 spoon Urad Daal
1/2 spoon Dhaniya
1 spoon Coconut
(roast each and make a powder)

For Seasoning:

1 spoon Oil
Some Urad Daal
Mustardx and Jeera
Kadi Patta, 1/4 spoon Tamarind pulp
Salt to taste
Oil (1 spoon)

Method:

  1. Peel plantain and cut into small cubes. Take that in a vessel, add some water (1/2 cup), salt and turmeric and pressure cook until 3 whistles.
  2. Put seasoning in kadai with urad daal, mustard and jeera. Add cut green chillies and kadi patta if you have. Now add cooked plantain along with water.
  3. Let it simmer on the stove for 2 min until water evaporates.
  4. Add the ground powder and some tamarind pulp. After a minute switch off the stove.

Note: Do not put too much of masala as it takes away original taste of this curry. Also I used fresh coconut and it came out excellent.

Alteration: Well... my mom used to prepare the above dish in a traditional way by just adding lemon juice or tamarind pulp to the above curry (no ground masala). That tastes good too. Remember, when you opt for lemon juice instead of tamarind pulp, add it at the end after you switch off the stove.
