Method
- Take 1 cup basmati, long grain rice, wash with water in a rotary motion, between palms.
- Remove water 2-3 times till milkiness disappears.
- Soak with enough water over the rice, add 1/2 tsp. salt.
- Keep aside for 15 minutes.
- Same procedure for any other rice, soak 30 minutes.
To proceed on Stove:
- On stove, place plenty of water to boil.
- When boiling starts, add rice and its water.
- Once boiling resumes, simmer covered partially.
- Simmer till done, (approx 10 minutes)
- To check, take a grain between thumb & finger.
- Press. Should break easily, but not have a hard grain.
- Also, should not become pasty.
- Remove and drain in the sink in a colander.
- Save water in a container to dilute and use as starch for clothes.
To proceed in the Pressure Cooker:
- In pressure cooker, take rice in a cooker container.
- Add its water too. The fingers when run it, should have water high enough to touch second phalange.
- Cover, and cook to allow 2 whistles.
- For any other variety cook an extra whistle.
- Allow steam to come out and cool cooker before opening.
To proceed in the Microwave:
- In microwave, heat 3 cups water in a large bowl.(Use the rice water first)
- Add rice to the boiling water.
- Cover loosely and cook on high for 14-15 minutes.
- Allow to stand for 5-7 minutes before opening.
- If any other rice, increase the quantity of water, by half cup.
- Always use a large, deep bowl, to avoid overflows and spillovers.
