Maharashtrian Dishes

Tips
  • A midwestern state of India, Maharashtra, carries a history of many great golden men and events.
  • This state has a beautifully merged touch of coastal and central plateau tastes, since it stretches from the rocky raindrenched western ghats to the north central parts of the deccan plateau.
  • The people are simple, most traditional maharashtrian ladies wear the beautifully elegant 'nav-vari saadi' or the nine yard sarree. Gentlemen wear the dhoti or pajama and kurta which is white, accessorised with the white topi.
  • Rich in tradition and culture, graceful and rich dances, theatre, classical singing are inborn talents of the people of this state. It has produced great actors, actresses of stage and cinema alike. As well as an array of equally great singers.
  • Where food is concerned the range and variety are mindboggling and tongue tickling. Here you will find strong aromas of spices (like black maharashtrian masala), garlic and ginger in abundance.
  • Many vegetables like brinjal, tomatoes, etc. are stuffed with spicy masala fillings and cooked in the oil in which they are seasoned, till tender. This brings out the rich flavour of the veggies, since they are cooked in their own juices. Though to speed up the cooking process, as well as to cut down oil use (calories!) people tend to add water to their vegetables.
