    Thai pirandhal vazhi pirakkum (The beginning of Tamil Month Thai will pave the way for new opportunities) is a popular proverb emphasizing the importance of Tamil Nadu's harvest festival - Pongal. Each day of this festival has a different significance. 

    The first day, Bhogi, is dedicated to Lord Indra. The second day is much loved by all as everyone gets to taste - 'Pongal' - a special dish made with rice which is offered to Sun God in artistic mud pots along with juicy sugarcanes. On 'Maattu Pongal', gratitude is expressed to the cattle and this day is extremely joyful with an array of events like 'Jallikattu' that test the bravery of youngsters. 'Kaanum Pongal' is a day meant to spend time with the dear and near ones.
