Description: Shallots belong to the onion family. Like garlic, shallots are formed in clusters. The skin colour of shallots can vary from golden brown to gray to rose red, and their off-white flesh is usually tinged with green or magenta. It is extensively cultivated for culinary purposes. Shallots taste like onions but are milder in flavour and appear smaller in size.
Commonly used in: Finely sliced, deep-fried shallots are used as a condiment in Asian cuisine. In Indian cuisine these are used in curries and sambar.
Health benefit: Shallots are rich in Vitamin A and potassium and low in sodium.
