Star fruit

Mathippuli, Carambola

Description: 
The fruit is native to south east Asia. The fruit, ovate in shape has ridges on the sides and in cross section it resembles a star. The fruit is edible as such and it is also made into preserves, juice drinks etc. The flesh of the fruit is translucent to light yellow in colour.
   
Commonly used as: 
To make drinks and also used in fish curries to get a tangy taste.

The fruit stimulates flow of milk in nursing mothers. It is full of antioxidants and flavonoids. It is rich in vitamin C. It lowers cholesterol.
