Description:
Though we consider the tomato a vegetable, it is botanically a fruit. Tomatoes originated in Mexico and were introduced to the world after the Spanish colonization of the Americas. They are rich in lycopene, a carotenoid pigment, and are available throughout the year. There are several varieties of tomatoes, categorieses mostly on their shape and size.
The various varieties are: Beefsteak, Oxheart, Plum tomatoes, Pear tomatoes, Cherry tomatoes, Grape tomatoes and Campari tomatoes.

The tomato is consumed in different ways, including raw. It’s a key ingredient in bakes, curries, sauces, salads and drinks.

Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin A and C.
Tomatoes, tomato sauces and puree are said to help lower urinary tract symptoms. They also have anti cancer properties. Some claim that eating tomatoes can also help reduce cardiovascular risk associated with type 2 diabetes.
